Sri Sathya Sai Baba
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
Words of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba from his Biography: "My Mission is to grant you Courage and Joy, to drive away Weakness and Fear. Do not condemn yourselves as sinners; sin is a misnomer for what are really errors, provided you repent sincerely and resolve not to follow Evil again. Pray to the Lord to give you the strength to overcome the habits which had enticed you when you were ignorant."
"I have come to light the lamp of Love in your hearts, to see that it shines day by day with added luster. I have not come on any mission or publicity for any sect or creed or cause nor have I come to collect followers for any doctrine. I have no plans to attract disciples or devotees into my fold or any fold. I have come to tell you of the Universal, Unitary Faith, this Path of Love, this Duty of Love, this Obligation to Love." (Sri Sathya Sai Baba, 4 July 1968)

Inspired Medicine: Sathya Sai Baba's Influence in Medical Practice
By Judy Warner (Compiler)
Leela Pr; 1st edition (June 27, 2000)
288 pages
ISBN: 1887906029

The supreme and the incomparable divinity of Bhagawan Baba is known and validated only through the experiences of devotees — not so much of witnessing the transformation of invisible divine energy into material objects, but involving the transformation of their hearts — their attitudes towards life, their approaches to their work and their value systems. Hence, Transformation of the Heart, the first book brought out by Judy Warner, has become one of the most valuable references in Sai literature.

It is easy to listen to and read the speeches of Baba but to put the principles into practice is really an uphill task. This was beautifully brought out in her second book, The Dharmic Challenge. Now, the third one in this series, Inspired Medicine is truly inspiring because it narrates the experiences of people in the profession of healing who are often regarded as demigods because of their ability to get rid of pain and suffering due to diseases. This ability on the other hand makes the doctors to have sky-high egos too, making them quite ill indeed spiritually!

The divine doctor Baba demonstrates how He cures them by proving how He can, if He wills, make the impossible possible, tacitly impressing upon them that they are at best, the most efficient instruments through which He treats patients, and not the basic cause of their cures. For example, on 1st October, 1994 in Trayee Brindavan, He revives Venkatesh of Nigeria after he was declared dead by a doctor. In January 1978, a comatose woman who in spite of the efforts of ten specialists, infusion of 155 units of fresh blood and multiple units of frozen plasma over a period of several weeks, suffered a cardiac arrest. She was resuscitated but continued in coma! The doctor prays to Swami and talks to the comatose patient for recovery. The woman recovers and leaves for her home within a week. An Argentinian doctor cured himself of chronic sinusitis and arthrosis of cervical spine by using Baba’s Vibhuti : In Australia, an anaesthetist injects 20 units of syntocinon before delivery instead of after delivery and is terrified at the outcome : a powerful and sustained uterine contraction within a minute that will kill the fetuses! He prays fervently and the drug does not act! Swami controls the very nature of the drug instantly! But after the delivery, the drug does act exactly as expected!

Such medical miracles lead to the transformation of hearts of these doctors (18 of them in about 10 countries) and they become more patient with their patients, more positive in their outlook, more understanding and adjusting with respect to their subordinates etc., and begin to use prayer more and more as an important curative agent.

The transformation of an eminent British ophthalmic surgeon is dramatic and even brings on a smile in the reader: He insists on bringing a case of expensive alcohol and reserves A.C. accomodation in a 5- star hotel with a swimming pool etc., And he begins calling Swami ‘Sir’! But within 15 minutes of being with Swami, asks the taximan to take the alcohol, decides to stay in the Prasanthi Nilayam Ashram.

Another doctor, after dream visions of Baba gives up the addiction to cigarettes (30 per day for 25 years) and becomes a teetotaler and vegetarian as well.

Summing up, these stories "describe a grand historic event — a world teacher brings Heart into a field which has long been tempted by money and position…" This book is indeed a great work, a wonderful yet highly credible account of actual experiences of the Divine Avatar Baba and so a must in the collection of Sai books by Sai Devotees, for it is a great reinforcer of faith in our beloved Lord.

"A book of miracle, marvel and medicine that has the power to amaze, delight, teach and transform."

These stories describe a grand historic event - a world teacher bringing heart into a field which has long been tempted by money and position. Sathya Sai Baba's hospital symbolizes a new approach to medicine in which care is provided free of charge and love is an essential ingredient in the healing process. Sai Baba says, 'Science without humanity is dangerous'. - Samuel H. Sandweiss M.D.

Eighteen physicians weave a tapestry of love and compassion, describing how Sathya Sai Baba has lit a flame of inspiration in their medical practice. The reader sees how, again and again, both the patient and the doctor are transformed.

Miraculous cures are in abundance, testifying that Sai Baba is constantly helping us. He blesses the physicians, kindling within them the fire of devotion, so that both patient and doctor can be healed physically, mentally, and spiritually.

These experiences are in contrast to Western medicine today in which doctors are trained to rely solely on scientific principles and, in doing so, often lose their compassion, viewing medical practice as merely a business. The physician authors tell us how becoming a Sai Baba sevotee has influenced and changed their relationship with patients, transformed them as doctors, and how they experience Sai Baba's hand in their practice.

These stories celebrate the Lord, providing us with new insights and comfort, and showing us what medicine could become.
