MINISTRY OF EDUCATION
MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION
The process of educational change in our
country has, since 1994 been
arguably the sternest challenge confronting our young democracy.
In
spite of a dreadful legacy of a racially segregated education
system and
curriculum, and vast inequalities between schools and other
institutions
of learning, this process of change and transformation is showing
encouraging signs of progress.
The relatively short but proud history of the Shri Sathya Sai Seva
Organisation in South Africa is indicative of this progress. As
Government,
we fully support the underlying principle on which Sathya Sai
schools
operate, namely the provision of a value-based education that
prepares
pupils for life, qualifying them as valuable assets to the society
they
are entering. Few would argue with the fact that the values prioritised
in the Sathya Sai schools' curriculum, such as politeness,
discipline
and respect, provide a strong foundation for building good moral
character in children.
Our country's Constitution has ushered in a new
set of values, further
entrenched in the Department of Education's - "Values in
Education"
initiative. Like the Sathya Sai schools, our mission is to
regenerate the
ethical and moral fibre of our society and to infuse our young
people
with a spirit of nation-building. Of course, these values should
ideally
be internalised by all our people, but what better place to start
than
in our schools.
The opening of the third Sathya Sai school in
our country is indeed an
occasion to celebrate the wonderful gift of education and I am honoured
to be able to share this occasion with the pupils, parents and
staff.
May this school have a long and successful history.
Professor Kader Asmal, MP Minister of
Education,
18th September, 2002.
