About
Devi "Sri Mookambika"
Mother Mookambika is
regarded as a
manifestation of
Maha Kali, Maha Laksmi
and Maha Saraswathi.
Sri Mookambhika temple
is in Kollur.
This small, ancient,
sacred town is about a
four-hour bus ride to
northeast of Mangalore.
The sacred ‘Sauparnika’
River flows through this
town. Located here is a
temple dedicated to the
goddesses Maha-Lakshmi,
Saraswati, and Durga,
combined as Sri Devi
Mookambika.
Here
Sri-Devi resides in the
Padmasana posture, with
three eyes, bearing a
shankha, and chakra with
a pleasant appearance to
bless the devotees.
She is also present
in the form of a
Jyotirlinga here, which
has a golden line
separating the Linga
into two halves,
representing Shiva and
Shakti. It is kept in
front of Devi.
The Skanda Purana extols the glory
of this holy place.
It is a Siddha
Kshetra - a place where
one can attain
liberation. Even to
this day, this place is
free from all crimes
such as robbery due to
the living presence of the extremely
powerful Goddess.
It is
said that once when Aadi
Shankaracharya reached
this place in the night,
when the Goddess was
roaming around in the
ferocious form of
Maha-Chandi, Aadi
Shankara pleased her
with his sweet hymns and
then she appeared to him
as
Maha-Tripurasundari,
the most beautiful one
in the three worlds.
As per
Devi’s instructions,
Shankara established a
Sri-Chakra in
front of the
Jyotirlinga. He
also established an
incredibly beautiful
image of Sri Devi as she
appeared in front of
him.
About "Sri Chakra"
The Sri
Chakra is an 'Yantra',
which is a Tantrik
diagrammatic
representation of Devi.
It represents the
symbolic Energy form of
Goddess. The same Sri
Chakra in 3 dimensional
form is called
'Sri Meru'.
(Similar to the
representation of Lord
Shiva in the form of
'Lingam'). Yantra pooja
is the worship of a
deity who is in a
diagrammatic form. It
can be simply worshipped
and allowed to radiate
its energy outwards to
create prosperity and
harmony for the
worshipper as well as
the whole enviornment.
The worship of Devi in
'Sri chakra' is regarded
as the highest form of
the Devi worship. The
presiding Deity of
'Srichakra Devi',
is known as
'Lalitha Tripura
Sundari'.
Purpose of Chandi Homam
The purpose of
the Chandi Homam is to
remove obstacles or
blocks in the growth –
both internally and
externally – of a person
or a group of people.
Chandi Homam
removes various forms of
negative energies that
can create negative
thoughts, fear etc.
This
Yagnya is offered to
Mother Divine for
bringing prosperity and
removing negative energy
in house, workplace and
physical health terms.
What Rudrabhishekam is
for Shiva, Chandi Homam
is for Devi.
Why Homam ?
Homam or fire sacrifice
is an auspicious way of
accessing the Divinity
within us by manifesting
it externally. In most
of our ceremonies the
sacrificial fire is lit.
The two pieces
of wood
symbolise the
body and the
soul (the true
spirit in man) and the
lighting of the
fire symbolises
that the physical body
should start a
quest for spiritual life.
Fire, unlike earth
(solid) and water
(liquid), is the first
element that is able to
make an upward
transition, defying as
it were the forces of
gravity (representing
our limitations and
attachments). It is this
elevating property of
the fire – by the grace
and compassion of the
Goddess - that allows
the divine purpose of
our lives to find
_expression, to be
manifested here an
auspicious way of
accessing the Divinity.
Significance of 'Chandi
Yagnya'
Chandi
Devi is the Divine
Mother of the universe.
She is considered to be
Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi,
and Maha Saraswati
combined into one form.
She is also known as
Durga Devi, and
She is the Yogamaya of
Lord Vishnu.
She was given all kinds
of powers by Brahma,
Vishnu, Shiva to destroy
the demons.
According
to Markandeya Purana,
Chandi Devi destroyed
demons like: Madhu,
Kaitava, Shumbha,
Nishumbha, Chanda,
Munda, Raktabija,
DhumraLochana as well as
the main demon
Mahishasura, during the
nine days in the month
of Aswayuja. These nine
days we celebrate as
'Dussera' or
'Navarathri'.
Who are these Demons?
These Demons were none
other than
those representing the
demonic qualities
of human being.
Praying to Goddess
Chandi, will
thus destroy
all these
bad, evil qualities in
us.
What
Happens when you Worship
Her ?
By
worshipping Devi, one
merely invokes, one's
own divine power, which
lies dormant within, to
discover and destroy
one's own negative
forces and animalistic
tendencies.
As Mahakali,
She destroys “ the great
darkness” that limits
the consciousness as
“Madhu (too much) and
Kaitaba(too little).
Then as Mahalakshmi,
She destroys Great Ego
(Mahishasura), Seed of
Desire (Raktabiija),
Passion (Chanda) and
Anger (Munda);
Then as Maha Saraswathi,
She destroys
Self-Conceit-Pride-Superiority
complex (Shumban)
and Self-Deprecation-
constantly belittles
himself- Shame-
inferiority complex
(Nishumban).
What Mantras will be
chanted during Chandi
Yagnya?
The
Mantras from the Devi
Saptha Sathi known as
'Devi
Mahatmiyam' are
chanted while performing
the Chandi Yagnya, the
sacred fire ritual to
the Goddess.
Major part of the ritual
or ceremony is internal. The external ceremony is often coupled with internal visualization,
garnering our infinite
resources within, making
the ritual both powerful
and meaningful.
Devi Mahatmiyam
or Durga Saptasati
is the text known as
Chandi Purana. It
consists of
'Seven Hundred' Hymns,
divided into
'Thirteen chapters',
that describes the
battle between Goddess
Chandi
and
the demons. It gives
the stimulating
description of what
Maha-Kali did, what
Maha-Lakshmi did and
Maha-Sarasvati did in
bringing about this
evolution, this
transformation of the
whole range of
Prakriti from
Tamas to
Rajas, from
Rajas to
Sattva and from
Sattva to
Supreme Vijaya,
mastery in the Absolute,
God-realisation.
It describes to us the
march of the human soul
to its destination.
We proceed from antagonism
to prosperity,
from
prosperity to
enlightenment,
and from
enlightenment to
Self-realisation. So,
these are 'truths'
esoterically conveyed to
us in the Mantras of the
Devi-Mahatmya.
This battle and victory
of Devi in the nine
days, is celebrated as
Navaratri or Dussera and
the tenth day is
celebrated as
Vijayadasami, day of
true victory.
It indicates the
transcendence of the
ego, by attaining
victory over sense-life
and mergence in the
ecstatic experience of
the Transcendental
Reality.
The Truth of Mantra
The
Mantra is not a
composition. It is a
revelation. It came from
the bosom of the
Infinite and lodged
itself in the core of
Rishis,
who had conditioned themselves
to receive it by means
of their purified state.
The Rishis dwelt upon
the truth so received
and when it was ready to
articulate, it found the
right words and emerged
into open.
Mantras are sounds.
Sounds are known by
their vibrations, for
they are not mere words.
These powerful
mantras can spread
positive Vibrations in
the atmosphere, so that
people may start
thinking in the right
direction and perform
righteous actions as
well
In
other words the Mantra
is the body of the Truth
in the form of sound or
the Deity that en-souls
it. It is Deity
who gives efficacy to
the Mantra. Without Her
charge from within, the
Mantra remains a
combination of
syllables. The Divine
Mother’s Power that is
embedded in the Mantra,
makes it potent for the
purpose intended.
The
Divine in manifestation
takes on several bodies
for several actions.
The Mantra is 'the
Sound-body' of the
Divine, through which
appropriate forces are
released.
What is Satha Chandi?
In Satha Chandi, one has
to chant the 700 verses
of Mantras, a 100 times
before the
Poorna-ahuthi. Also
chanted are other
verses/Vedic Chants such
as the Devi Atharva
Shiirsham, Durga Suktam,
Sri Suktam, Devi Suktam,
and Ratri Suktam, other
verses like Durga,
Lakshmi and Saraswathi
astotharams.
These hymns of Devi
Mahatmyam embodies
Mantras and there is a
procedure for its
recitation.
There are three hymns:
"the Argala Stotram,
Keelaka Stotram and the
Kavacham", which
are to be chanted before
reciting the Devi
Mahatmyam. 'Argalam'
enables to prevent
obstructions. 'Keelakam'
is chanted for
removing impediments
while undertaking this
worship. 'Kavacham'
is recited to protect
the devotee like a
shield from all dangers.
Every Mantra is full of
inner significance.
And every Mantra is
repeated by devotees for
some purpose or the
other. Especially, the
Devi-Mahatmyam is
recited for averting
calamities in life.
Catastrophies,
calamities and tensions,
whatever they be, all
these are averted by a
regular daily recital of
the Devi-Mahatmiyam.
It is one of the most
prescribed mantras for
'all round Dosha
removal' and 'success'
in all undertakings.
When
there is any war
threatening a country or
any epidemic spreading
anywhere, or any
internal tension or
anxiety of any kind, the
Devi-Mahatmiyam is to
be recited, as it is
a very potent remedy
prescribed by the Seers
of yore, not only
for temporal terrestrial
prosperity, but also for
illumination of
transcendental reality,
for the destruction
of Avidya or
Ajnana.
What one
should offer in
Poorna-ahuti
The name
itself speaks ‘complete
offering’
meaning
'complete offering away
of oneself'.
The participants are
here made to feel deep
within their hearts as
to how finally what they
seek for must come as
the Divine Blessing.
They can only
put efforts to a certain
extent in the physical
realm but
beyond that
things have to just
happen and
they must only
surrender to the Divine
will and
wait in
gratitude.
In the
Chandi Homam, the
Poorna-ahuthi offerings,
consists of ingredients
that significantly
correspond to the
Chapters in the Devi
Mahatmyam.
The
offering of the
Poorna-ahuti marks the
completion of the Homam.
Thereafter, the
performers and
participants get up and
go round the homa kunda
three times in the
clockwise direction and
prostrate before the
homa Kunda.
Why these
Yagnyas are being
performed now?
Our world is in a state
of chaos and confusion
now because many have
forgotten their true
origin and are obsessed
with material gains and
pleasures. Nature is
God's gift, and it is
our duty to follow
nature and live by its
laws. Dis-regarding it
would be suicidal and
catastrophic. By saving
our Planet Earth we save
ourselves from
catastrophes.
We are
living in a world where
greed, selfishness,
jealousy and misuse of
power are the order of
the day. We all have to
collectively erase the
negative Karma of Earth
and Humanity and
restore the energies of
‘unconditional love’
through our intense
prayer,
spreading awareness
among people and raising
consciousness of
humanity
.
Let us pray for
the welfare of the whole
world
Let us live and
abide by the laws of the
nature
Let more souls
be awakened to their
divinity
Let there be
transformation of lower
energies
Let there be
awakening of love and
light in the heart of
all mankind.
