Awake, Arise and Stop not till the goal is reached.

If some people say there is no God, it only means they are at too great a
distance to be aware of Him.

Duty in the world carries no weight when God calls. God is the goal of life.
When in His company there is no duty.

STORY FOR THIS WEEK

THE PURNAVATARAS

According to the Indian conception, the Lord Vishnu has so far descended
incarnate in nine forms, UNTIL THE CURRENT SHRI SATYA SAI BABA THE
YUGAVATARA.

6. PARASHURAMA

The Lord Rama with axe in his hand. This also is an important incarnation.
The earlier five incarnations were mainly for affirming the supremacy of
consciousness over mater, the Vedic vision of life. This sixth incarnation
is unique in the sense that in it the first and the last attempt was made to
establish the supremacy of brain power over muscle power. In this
incarnation the Lord had to come as a Brahmana warrior to suppress the
inhuman atrocities committed by a Kshatriya Emperor. In the previous
incarnations the Brahmins were always backing either the Kshatriyas or the
common people to suppress the Daityas who were opposed to the Vedic way of
life. In this incarnation, a Brahmin had to show the Kshatriyas what their
duty was in the polity of a nation.

Parashurama was a very learned and a brave son of the sage Jamadagni a scion
of the ancient Bhrigu family. His grand mother was Satyavati the daughter of
the King Gadhi. His mother was Renuka who on witnessing the water sport of a
Gandharva and his wife’s weakness felt that it does not behave a Brahmin
lady to entertain such thoughts and ordered his sons to kill her. None
dared, but Parashurama did it. Jamadagni was very much pleased with
Parashurama and granted him a boon. With this boon, Parashurama revived his
mother.

Heaping severe abuse on a reputed person is like a death to him. The other
sons of Jamadagni did not muster courage to abuse their mother. Parashurama
obeyed his father and won his confidence and with that restored his mother
to the esteem of his father. This appears to be the actual train of events.

In those days Kartaveerya alias Sahasrarjuna was a mighty Emperor belonging
to the famous Haihaya Kshatriya dynasty. He was a devotee of the sage Datta
the son of the sage Atri. Arjuna had obtained a boon from this Dattatreya to
have the following of thousand very devoted soldiers. With such power he
became puffed up. He even insulted Sage Datta’s father the Sage Atri who
because of his very pacific nature pardoned him. Atri’s another son
Duurvasa, however could not bear this insult and harassed Arjuna in such a
way that he had to seek reconciliation with Durvasa.

But this Kartaveerya had scant respect from the Brahmanas. He thought to
himself: What these learned men can do to him, a powerful Emperor. They have
no power, no wealth. They have only learning. What is the worth of brain
power against muscle power?

With the boon from sage Dattatreya, he was always moving about with a large
army, the 1000 commandoes always ready to die to save him. He thus developed
into a tyrant. His commandoes and other soldiers became instruments of teror
and harassment even to ordinary peaceful citizens. Kartaveerya, it is stated
had even fought with the sea. This showed that he even fought with the poor
fishermen who lived on the mercy of the sea.

These harassed citizens approached Parasurama with tales of woe. He advised
them to organise their own squads to fight with these terrorists. He moved
about amongst the subjects and instilled confidence in them.

One day these terrorists finding that Parashurama was not at the Ashrama,
attacked it and forcibly removed the cow with the calf belonging to the
Ashram. The Brahmins ran to Kartaveerya, instead of sympathising with them
and controlling his terrorist gangs, insolently told them to seek protection
from that Brahmin Parashurama.

When Parashurama returned to the Ashrama and heard these stories, he
organised his own men and decided to attack Kartaveerya himself. In the
battle that ensued Parashurama overpowered him and cut his throat with his
axe. He then defeated his 21 other allies, the Kshtriya kings.

This defeat of 21 kings in all, is described as doing away with Kshatriyas
twenty-one times.

Parashurama did not want to rule over these 21 kingdoms. He gifted them away
to the sage Kashyapa who in turn again handed these over to 21 deserving
sons of these Kshatriya kings. He knew that Brahmanas are an important
section of this society. But they can not thrive unless they are protected
by Kshatriyas and fed by the Vaishyas. In the Varna system, every varna has
its importance and role to play.
