THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE BY BHAGAWAN SRI SATHYA SAI BABA

I am determined to correct you only after informing you of my credentials.
That is why I am now and then announcing my Nature by means of miracles,
that is, acts which are beyond human capacity and human understanding. Not
that I am anxious to show off my powers. The object is to draw you closer to
me, to cement your hearts to Me.

REPENTANCE

You may not be able to see it, but it is clear before My eyes. As days pass,
even those who are not able to recognise the Truth of Sai will have to
approach with tears of repentance and experience Me. So this will happen
worldwide.

STORY FOR THIS WEEK

THE PURNAVATARAS

According to the Indian conception, the Lord Vishnu has so far descended
incarnate in nine forms, UNTIL THE CURRENT SHRI SATYA SAI BABA THE
YUGAVATARA.

9. BUDDHA

The incarnation of the enlightened one. After the establishment of the rule
of righteousness in about 3138 B.C. The Purana’s state that Kaliyaga was
ushered in at the same moment as Krishna’s departure from this world of
mortals.

Buddha came in 1885 BC. He saw that the people around had forgotten the
teachings of Lord Krishna, who had advocated replacement of the killing of
animals in yajna  worship by offering items of food to the fire as
oblations. But this exhortation of Lord Krishna was not followed by the
ritualistic minded Brahmanas and the Kshatriyas. The slaughter of animals in
the name of yajna had increased so much so that the Charvakas  the atheists
started a very vigorous and telling campaign against rituals and religion
based on these. There were many saintly Brahmanas and they were preaching
against animal sacrifice in the name of yajna – worship. But they confined
themselves to the cosy life of their hearths and homes. Beyond preaching the
virtues of right type of worship, they did nothing to rouse the masses
against this killing spree in the name of yajnas.
This task fell on the Buddha.

He was born of Shuddhodana the King of the Shakyas with his capital at
Kapila  Vastu in northern Bihar at the foot of the Himalayas. He was named
Gautama. The astrologers had predicted that he ould take to Sannyasa
renunciation. The father wanted his son to continue his line and he saw to
it that he was not involved in any way in any discussion with the hermits.

But Gautama was not an ordinary man. He found that in the name of religion
mindless rituals were flourishing. Mass-killings of animals in the name of
tajna was continuing and none ever worried to know or reach God. Gautama
felt intuitively that this type of worship was not conducive to God
realization. He also saw that the saints and other God fearing elite were
only expressing their pious wishes against animal killing in the yajnas,
from their ivory tower resorts. He had therefore decided to leave his happy
home and practice panance in a forest far from the haunts of men, to find
out the truth. After practising penance for quite a long period, he declared
that he had divined the truth. He said he is now Buddha  the enlightened
one.

He started vigorously preaching his doctrine of non-killing of animals in
the name of God. His general teachings were similar to the Vedic vision of
the life. He said:

1) Life is the source of unhappiness, 2) because our sense desires lead us
astray and cause unhappiness. 3) Control, therefore your desires 4) and then
you get liberation. For this purpose follow the eight-fold path.

2) The eight ways are: 1)Develop good thoughts. 2)Your motives should be
pure. 3) Your speech should be pleasing. 4) Your actions should be
righteous. 5) Your behaviour should be to create good-will amongst others.
6) You should put in proper efforts. 7) Develop purity in mind and 8)follow
the practice of meditation.

His followers, however gave a twist to his teachings and proclaimed that
Buddha founded a separate religion and it was anti-Veda. This is a totally
incorrect presentation. Buddha’s insistence was on Sannyasa. He had very
little to teach to the common man. For it was all embodied in the Vedas and
he reiterated those teachings. He did not abolish caste. He extolled the
Brahmanas. Ashwaghosa and Nagarjuna, themselves Brahmanas, in order to gain
importance in society, stated that Buddha was anti-Veda, anti-Brahmin,
anti-yajna and so on. These Buddha Leaders proclaimed that Buddha was the
founder of the other religion and his teachings were anti-Veda. Their
philosophy of Shunya-Vada was irrational and they had to retract it later on
and state that their Shunya is Purna and so none else than Vedantic Brahma.

Shankaracharya finding that Buddhism was prevalent in larger part of India
since about 1800 B.C. to his time i.e. about 500 B.C. he paved the way for
acceptance of Buddha as the incarnation of God. He could thus wipe out even
the trace of Buddhism from India. In foreign countries, however, it
continues even today, as the propagators of this religion had reached those
countries and had established it as a dominant religion for over 1000 years.
The Vedics were not propagators and so they rested content over absorbing
Buddhism into their fold in India, the land of its birth.

Buddha’s avatarhood lies in the fact that he advocated the propagation of
even that was good. It is not always that good riumphs. It has also to be
assiduously cultivated and propagated, otherwise, by incessant propaganda,
even anti-Christ Christianity, has today more adherents than the
Vedic-Dharma, the mother of all religious faiths.
