WORLD NEWS ON POVERTY

America's Second Harvest helps hungry Americans through its network of over 200 food banks and food-rescue programs. Working with food growers and manufacturers, as well as distributors, its programs have resulted in nutritious meals for millions of children and adults. Each time you take action at The Hunger Site, you support these innovative programs. Through these cooperative efforts we can make a positive difference in the lives of hungry Americans.

During this time of political and economic uncertainty, many of us are watching our budgets more closely and becoming more mindful of how we can cut down on waste. Imagine -- 1,000 tons of bananas, 1,000,000 pounds of frozen carrots, and 10,000,000 cans of sweet corn. All of this food would have simply been thrown away and wasted, even though it was perfectly good to eat.

But instead, all of this food went to hungry Americans who could not afford a trip to the grocery store after paying their rent, their mortgages, medical care costs, and basic utility bills.

America's Second Harvest stops waste and ends hunger by making it easy for food manufacturers, producers, retailers and restaurants to donate food they cannot sell. Sometimes, food ends up in packages that are mislabeled, dented or under-filled. Food might be the wrong shape, size or color, or a donor may just have a larger quantity on hand than they can sell before it expires.

For instance, one food producer recently found itself "stuck" with half-expired items (meaning that there were six months or fewer left on the products' expiration labels). Because of this, no grocery stores wanted to buy the product. A contact at the company tried to donate the items to local churches and soup kitchens, but none of them had the capacity to handle the huge pallets of items. She was upset that her company might have to dump so much food.

When she got home from work, however, she coincidentally found a mailing from America's Second Harvest and returned to work the next day knowing exactly where to donate the half-expired items.

Every day America's Second Harvest makes these sorts of important connections. Recently it secured a donation of biscuits that could not be sold to a fast food chain because they were undersized; it prevented a company from having to dump a truckload of shredded cheese because it did not sell as much as estimated. It receives much-needed items, such as shampoo, diapers, and cleaning supplies, all of which are especially crucial for people on limited budgets since they cannot be purchased with food stamps.

When you click to give, you make it possible for America's Second Harvest to rescue food and grocery items that would otherwise go wasted. The more help America's Second Harvest receives from individuals like you, the less food is wasted, and the more we can all provide hungry Americans with the help they need.
