MESSAGE BY BHAGAWAN SRI SATHYA SAI BABA
Scatter the seeds of love in dreary hearts; then sprouts of love
will make
vast lands green; blossoms of love will make the air fragrant;
rivers of
love will murmer along the valleys; every bird will beat; every
child will
sing the song of love.
- BHAGAWAN SRI SATHYA SAI BABA
STORY FOR THIS WEEK
THE PURNAVATARAS
According to the Indian conception, the Lord Vishnu has so far
descended
incarnate in nine forms:
1. MATSYA
Matsya or fish incarnation is the first amongst them. As Baba has
often said
Brahman is all that we see around and so fish is also Brahman. The
story as
told in Shatapatha Brahman is as follows:
One day while Manu Satyavrita the king was paying his morning
ablutions to
the God sun, a small fish fell into his hands. He was about to throw
it
away, when it requested Manu to save it. In return, it promised to
rescue
him when a great deluge would sweep away all the creatures on the
Earth.
Manu took it home in a jar. It began growing and no vessel at his
palace was
sufficiently large to hold it. So finally it was taken to the sea
and
released into it.
The fish asks Manu to construct a ship and take all the species into
it when
the deluge sweeps the Earth. When the floods came Manu fastened the
ship to
the horns of the fish, and loading it with all the creatures, plants
and
seeds of different grains took it safely to the northern mountain.
This story is symbolic. It is found in Mahabharat and also in the
Puranas.
It has also its echoes in the Greek literature as well as in Avesta
the
scripture of the Zoroastrians.
This story is the Central theme of the Matsya Purana. It is stated
there
that the ship constructed by Manu is the Veda. Matsya is the Lord
Vishnu
himself. In the south a demon named Shankha having say over the
Southern
ocean was the ruler. He was a materialistic out and out and so he
did not
recognise the values of life as preached by Vedas. He was only after
pelf
and power. He did not recognise the value of righteous behaviour
(Dharma).
The muscle power and money power were the dominant instruments
forged by
Shankha and his associates who also included some of the righteous,
pure and
weak sections of the populace, had become the instruments in the
hands of
the few around Shankha, who were out to exploit the righteous and
the weak.
Bhagawan came in the form of a sage-like king Manu, killed Shankha
and his
associates and reestablished the Vedic values of life, the harmony
between
the spiritual and the temporal.
In those far off days, in the south particularly in the present
Tamil Nadu
and Kerala, the people in general were living by the produce from
the sea
particularly fish. So they were the Matsyas, Shankha and his
materialist
associates were the ruling elite. Manu was a sage king in the north
with his
base at Manali, there is Manu temple and he is worshipped there.
One of the leaders of the Matsyas disgusted at the high handed and
power
hungry Shankha asura (demon or rakshasa) had heard of Manu, a sage
king. He
came to Manu and learnt from him the Vedic vision of life. Convinced
of its
potency in increasing the happiness of the people, he propagated
this idea
amongst his people in the south. The Matsyas grew in strength the
fish
became bigger and bigger and ultimately so big as to challenge the
ruler
Shankha. With the help of Satyavrita Manu, the Matsyas killed
Shankhasura
the rakshasa and established the supremacy of the Vedas in the
southern
India. This is the very first attempt at integration of the South
with North
India. These two halves were in the very early times separated by
the sea
(Rajasthan in far off days was submerged under water, is the finding
of the
geologists). When the land mass in between the north and south
upheaved due
to tectonic pressures, the south and north of India were joined
though still
separated by the Vindhya mountains. Many of these Matsyas who had
migrated
to the north had settled in the present Rajasthan which in
Mahabharat days
was designated as Matsya desh.
This symbolism when explained properly by reading the Puranas
between the
lines gives wealth of details about the early societies in India.
The Vedas
are the backbone of India and it has been the endeavour of all
Avatars to
inculcate in the minds of the people the Vedic vision of integral
way of
life, the key to happiness. This is what Baba is trying to do in the
present
days.
Bye for now and see you again next week with the second Puranavatar
KURMA.
