The highest Sadhana is the recitation of the Name of God with full

of thought and feelings, and with deep faith and also the loud
singing of
the glory of God.

STORY FOR THIS WEEK
THE PURNAVATARAS
According to the Indian conception, the Lord Vishnu has so far
descended
incarnate in nine forms:
2. KURMA
Tortoise incarnation. The simple story as narrated in the Puranas
is that
the Devas (the righteous people) and the Asuras or the Rakshasas
(the
demons) came together to exploit the wealth of the sea. It has to
be noted
that the Devas and the Danavas (the demons) always are to be found
living
side by side in any society. The Devas represent that class which
accepts
the Vedic vision of life and the Rakshasas are the materialists
whose vision
is clouded by the affluence which the wealth and power provides.
These two groups decided to churn the ocean for the purpose of
securing the
wealth from it. They used the mountain Mandara as the rod and the
giant
serpent Vasuki as the cord wound round the mountain and began
churning the
ocean. The mountain Mandara could not remain steady and began
getting
submerged by the waves of the sea. Lord Vishnu assumed the form of
a
tortoise and the mountain thus became stable on the back of it.
These two
classes thereafter succeeded in obtaining the wealth from the sea.
They
fought bitterly for the distribution of this wealth. But that is
beside the
theme here.
We have seen that the sea dividing the north and south of India
had vanished
by the tectonic upheaval and these two were connected by the
Vindhya ranges
and the huge land mass.
In Kurma tortoise, we find the qualities of supreme self
confidence, self
control and capacity for steady perseverance to achieve its
desired goal. It
is also tough and withstands all difficulties and wards of all
dangers. Such
a leader was the need of the times and this incarnate God came to
assist his
followers. As in the previous incarnation the materialists were
after more
and more wealth. The spiritualists were after renunciation and the
lazy
masses were averse to help the materialists (Rakshasa) in
production of the
wealth. This leader persuaded the spiritualists to shun
renunciation and
assume the leadership of the masses to produce more wealth so as
to have
ample store of consumer goods. He harped on the theme of vigorous
and good
but controlled life the Vedic vision.
These two groups thereafter joined and produced more wealth. This
leader
also emphasized, the need to exploit the land mass and develop
stable family
life the centre of happy and contented life. He impressed upon
them the
necessity of developing agriculture side by side with the
exploitation of
sea foods. This tortoise had easy and equal access to both land
and sea. The
Churning of the Sea Samudra Manthana is in practice the Vichara
Manthana,
the group and assembly discussions in depth.
Baba has said, he does not want to force the change. He wants us
to be
steady in our resolve and work patently for the re establishment
of Vedic
values by the transformation of our consiousness on a mass scale.
For this
purpose intelectual effort on a gigantic scale is necessary. The
whole
community, the city, the nation, nay the whole world has to bestir
itself.
