PORTLAND, OR (April 21, 2003) - Mercy Corps is providing emergency food
support to 150,000 people living in drought-stricken Eritrea. A $2
million grant from the US Agency for International Development’s Food for Peace
program is enabling Mercy Corps to deliver 24,770 metric tons of food
rations over the next 12 months and increase the ability of communities
to improve the condition of their existing nutritional and water supplies.
The worst drought to hit the region in two decades has devastated Eritrea
and neighboring countries of east Africa. More than one million people of
Eritrea’s population of 3.3 million are at risk of severe malnutrition
or starvation. The Government of Eritrea projects that the drought will
cause a food supply deficit of 400,000 metric tons.

The drought comes at a time when the people of Eritrea are struggling
to recover from the devastating effects of a border conflict with
Ethiopia, which severely stressed the country’s financial, material, and human
resources.

Mercy Corps is providing monthly food rations of wheat, lentils,
vegetable oil and other staple commodities to vulnerable families in especially
hard hit communities in the Northern Red Sea Zone. The agency is also
training and working with Village Health Committees to promote nutrition
education, and to improve the monitoring and use of existing food resources.

Mercy Corps is also working with community members to address crucial
water issues and provide support to farmers whose livestock have been
especially impacted by the drought.

Mercy Corps currently operates a nationwide Education Improvement
Program (EIP) in Eritrea with funding from the US Department of Agriculture’s
International Food for Education and Nutrition Initiative. The program
feeds over 55,000 children in over 130 schools throughout the country and
builds the capacity of Parent Teacher Associations to improve the education
environment in their schools. Mercy Corps also implements a
complementary water program addressing the hygiene and drinking water shortages in
schools throughout Eritrea.

In early January 2003, Mercy Corps oversaw the delivery and sale of
17,300 metric tons of wheat from the northwest region of the United States to
support the school feeding program in Eritrea.

Mercy Corps first began relief and development support to east Africa
in the mid-1980s with a four-year program based in Sudan that included
emergency relief to Eritrean refugees in Sudan. From 1995-1997, Mercy Corps
worked with the Kale Hiwot Church to carry out soil and water conservation
activities in central Eritrea. In 2000, Mercy Corps provided assistance
to families displaced by the border conflict with Ethiopia.

Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by
helping people build secure, productive and just communities. Since 1979, Mercy
Corps has provided over $710 million in assistance to people in 76
nations. The agency's programs currently reach over 5 million people in more
than 30 countries, including the United States. More than 92% of the agency's
resources are allocated to programs that directly assist those in need.

WORDS OF LOVE FROM BHAGAVAN

On one occasion, Radha said there was nothing else for her in her life.
She said Although I have not even a shelter in the world. I am bearing this
life for you sake. I cannot live, if I am seperated from you even for
one moment. You are like the eyeballs in my eyes. You are always like a
baby in my thoughts. I cannot have any life without you. When the milk maids
thus regard Krishna as a child is there any chance of their devotion taking
an unsacred form. Truly, if we want to understand the sacred contents of
Bhagavata, we will be able to do so only through devotion. If you take
our distorted vision and use it to understand Bhagavata, it will also
appear distorted. As your thoughts are, so is the result. The result will be
based on the thoughts which an individual has. Radha described Krishna as the
eyeball in her eye. Here also, there is a meaning which you should
recognise.

When you are standing in front of me and I am standing in front of you,
it is natural that I see my image in your eye and you see your image in my
eye. On the other hand, if we are not looking at each other, then you cannot
see your image in my eye and I cannot see my image in your eye. This
statement of Radha therefore, means that the milkmaids and Krishna are
inseparably situated close to each other. Krishna is present in their heart as if
he has been printed on the paper of their heart. Their thoughts are eternally
fixed on the name and form of Krishna. All their work is dedicated to
Krishna. His worship and devotion to him have become firm in their minds.

See your favorite form of God in that other person, as a matter of
fact, he is not other at all. It is His image as much as you are. You are not
helping some one individual you are adoring me in him. I am before you in that
form. I am yours; you are mine, forever and ever. I am in you; you are in Me.
There is no distance or distinction.

part of what Swami is doing. Of what use is human life if it is not spent in
the service of the poor?
