WORLD NEWS ON POVERTY
MERCY CORPS RESPONDS TO THE CRISIS IN LIBERIA
In the past few weeks, increased fighting in Monrovia and
other cities in Liberia has led to a further deterioration
of humanitarian conditions inside the country. After years
of violence, the renewal of a bloody civil war has forced
more than a million Liberians to flee, leaving them homeless
and in desperate need of assistance.
Food supplies are dangerously low. Hungry, scared, ill --
most families and children lack access to clean drinking
water or adequate sanitation, raising concerns about the
spread of cholera and other waterborne diseases.
Since the late 1990s there has been virtually no running
water in Monrovia and many parts of Liberia. By some estimates,
less than half the population has access to clean drinking
water, a problem heightened by the renewed conflict.
Mercy Corps Liberia Country Director, Denise Barrett, comments
"Our assessments have shown that water and sanitation are
among the most pressing needs for Liberians. Even before the
conflict, access to clean drinking water was limited. With
hundreds of thousands forced from their homes, the problem
has been exacerbated and this raises some very serious health
concerns."
Mercy Corps staff are continuing to assist families affected
by the war. Mercy Corps is working to deliver clean drinking
water to approximately 75,000 people living in nearly 100
communities across the country by repairing and installing
hand pump wells, constructing new latrines, and promoting
health and sanitation education.
Mercy Corps has worked in Liberia since September 2002,
operating a development program that helps build the capacity
of civic organizations and communities to participate in
development and conflict management processes that improve
social and economic conditions, build peace, and strengthen
democratic governance.
